The Surfers Journal Soundings Podcast Featuring Randy Rarick | November 2025

Anyone who knows surfing knows The Surfers Journal. Anyone who knows surfing knows Randy Rarick. The two came together (yet again) on November 11, 2025, on Soundings, which is the TSJ podcast hosted by Jamie Brisick. For the uninitiated, Brisick is a writer, photographer, and documentary filmmaker who initially gained recognition as a professional surfer in the 1980s and early 1990s. Skipping all of the stuff between then in now, allow us to simply say that Brisick is one of the most knowledgeable individuals in surf culture. He is only behind a select few in that capacity, including the likes of Matt Warshaw (creator of the Encyclopedia of Surfing) and the man whose name is on the website you’re visiting at this very moment.

During the podcast episode, Brisick and Rarick discuss Rarick’s founding role in establishing both the International Professional Surfers (IPS) with Fred Hemmings in 1976, and the Triple Crown of Surfing in 1983. The two also talk about the challenges that can along with introducing professional surfing during the rough-and-tumble era on the North Shore of Oahu. In addition, the interview delves into RR’s early days; learning to surf with Rabbit Kekai, being mentored as a surfboard builder by George Downing and Dick Brewer, and receiving words of wisdom from none other than Duke Kahanamoku.
